"Friend"ly Quotes

As most people know, I am obsessed with the TV show Friends. I know all of the episodes and it is pretty difficult to stump me on Friends trivia. I have even aced the competitions on cruise ships. Let's just say... I know my Friends. So, I have been blogging for well over a year now, and realized it is time to pay tribute to my show. So... here are some wonderful quotes from the series. I hesitate to say they are my favorite, because I have SO many, and could truly never remember them all. So, here are some great ones. I will likely do a follow-up blog later with even more. But until then...

- Greek minister to Chandler... "Are you Chandler?" Chandler responds with, "Are you Joey?"

- Monica talking to Rachel about Joshua... "What, he doesn't like Josh?" Rachel responds with, "No, I don't!"

- Brad Pitt as Will discussing the teacher Ross made out with in high school... "She also made out with Tatakakai Keck the night before he went back to Thailand."

- Brad Pitt as Will eating on Thanksgiving and throwing away his diet... "Screw it, bring on the yams."

- Joey when eating a lot... "Here come the meat sweats."

- Joey to turkey... "You, you are my Everest."

- Rachel talking to her sister Amy... "Okay, well, I went to the zoo yesterday and now I am a Koala bear."

- Rachel talking to her sister Amy... "I had a baby." Amy says, "I decorated dad's office." Rachel comes back with "Unless you pushed a desk out of your vagina, not the same thing."

- Rachel's sister Jill after being told she can't "have" Ross... "Can't have? The only thing I can't have is dairy."

- Phoebe on looking at the Playboy magazine... "Ahhh, remember the days you used to go out into the barn, lift up your shirt, and bend over?"

- Chandler to Monica as he gives her a piggy back ride... "I don't know, why don't you look in my saddle bag while I munch on a bale of hay!"

- Rachel asking Monica about who she went to lunch with... "Monica, who did you go to lunch with?" "Judy." "Who?" "Julie." "What?!?!" "Jody!"

- Ross responding to ex-wife Carol's lesbian partner Susan who just described the taste of breast milk as cantaloupe juice... "Oh you've tasted it."

- Joey about not wearing any underwear in Chandler's clothes... "I'm not going commando in another man's fatigues."

Damn that was fun... I could go on forever. On second thought... I will definitely do another one of these at a later date. In the mean time, please feel free to share your favorite Friends quote with me by adding a comment below.

Just Say No

Alright celebs, and everyone else for that matter... lay off the drugs. As we all know, Brittney Murphy died this week, and while it has not yet come out, you and I both know it is going to be drug related. We keep losing people to drugs and it is just sad. Lay off the pills, put down the needles, and for God's sake, please stop smoking things and shoving others up your nose.

While illegal drugs are a huge problem, the prescription drugs are becoming more and more of a problem. I will be the first person to admit, I love Percocet, but am not addicted to it, and only take it when I need it (for my back or gout). However, these people who are getting addicted, need help. And you know who I believe needs to be held accountable.... doctors. Not only are they prescribing medication in huge doses with tons of refills, but time and again, we are seeing prescriptions given to people that should not be mixed with other pills. While I know that most doctors are wonderful and play by the book, there are a few out there who are contributing to the deaths of these celebrities, and plain-Janes as well.

Now I know my readership, for the most part, and you are not the ones taking the drugs, nor are you the ones doing a bad job of prescribing them. So, I know I am preaching to the choir when I quote the famous line from the 80's... "Just Say No."

Use By Date

I do not like expired food. Honestly, I am not sure why anyone does. And that is why they invented "use by" dates on products. Those dates are not meant as a joke, they are not put their for no reason, and they certainly are not on packages to be ignored. Those dates are when food expires.... when it is no longer good. So I ask you... why do people keep consuming products after they have gone bad?

My mother, an avid read of this blog, is one of the worst offenders. Salad dressings from days gone bye, ketchup from the turn of the century (you guess which one), and condiments that my dad enjoyed and then put back in the fridge. Mind you, my father died in 2002. That said... my mother is not the only offender. You know who you are. So I ask you.... WHY?!?!?!

Food expires, it goes bad, and is no longer edible. Throw the damn products out. Now the weird one to me is the "sell by " date. What good is that? That tells me that the company and the grocery store know there is a time when their product expires, but they are taking the blame off themselves and putting it on us. If they sell it by then, they have done their part. It is then up to us to decide when we consume it by. Not cool! However, a sell by date is my mother's dream come true. All she has to say is "I bought it by then," and then keep it in her fridge until that product starts growing more product. Ucky!

So I urge you... please pay attention to those dates and throw out expired food. It's not good for you and it certainly does not taste good.

Happy Chanukah

Tonight marks the beginning of Chanukah. It is hard to believe it is already that time of year again. 2009 flew by, and now 2010 is just a few short weeks away. For all of those who celebrate... Happy Chanukah (or however you choose to spell it).

For those who do not know much about Chanukah, here is a lesson:

Chanukah is a celebration of religious freedom recalling a great victory that took place more than 2,000 years ago. Judah Macabee led a small group of his fellow Jews against the Syrian Greeks who tried to eradicate Judaism. Though the Jews were greatly out-numbered, they were victorious and succeeded in saving Judaism. Judah Macabee and his followers recaptured the Temple in Jerusalem that had been defiled by the Syrian Greeks.

When they rededicated the Temple, they discovered a small quantity of pure oil for the Menorah. They thought that the oil would only last for 1 day but a miracle occurred and it kept the Menorah lit for 8 days. Jews light 9 branched Menorahs in their homes: The middle candle is known as the “Shammes” (helper) and lights the other 8 candles. 1 candle is lit on the 1st night of Chanuakh, 2 candles on the 2nd night and so forth until the Holiday ends with the lighting of all 8 candles. To recall the miracle of the oil, foods fried in oil are eaten during Chanukah. Jews not living in Israel eat “Latkes” (potato pancakes) while Israeli Jews prefer jelly donuts. Jewish children spin the Dreidel, a spinning top: 1 Hebrew letter appears on each side reminding Jews that “a great miracle happened there”-- the pure oil lasted for 8 days.

So... to those of you who just learned something, I am glad I could teach. To those who already knew it... Happy Chanukah. May we all have a wonderful and happy holiday season filled with good food, good friends, good times, and good gifts.

Not-So-Dream Jobs

Awhile back, I posted some of my all time dream jobs. Now, you will be treated to the opposite side of that. Some jobs I would abhor.... or at least be terrible at. Here goes...

1. Gynecologist - This is a gay man's nightmare... enough said.

2. Construction Worker - Those guys (and gals) work all hours of the day/night and in all seasons. We are about to have a blizzard in Minnesota and the construction workers are outside our building doing their thing. And their outfits leave a little something to be desired.

3. Waiter - I am just not cut out for that. As soon as someone said, "Could I have a..." I am afraid I would cut them off with either "No!" or "Go right around the corner and get it yourself."

4. Politician - Just not my thing.

5. Maintenance Worker - I am not a fan of cleaning up after other people. I barely like cleaning up after myself... why would I clean up after you.

6. Funeral Director- It is just too depressing to think about. Your life is surrounded by sadness.

7. Astronaut - While it would be cool to see space... it would be WAY too constricting for me.

8. Highway Cleaner - It is bad enough looking at deer brains splattered across Highway 100... could you imagine being the one to clean it up?

9. Telemarketer - As is, I detest being on the phone, but to be on the phone and treated disrespectfully and hung up on... no thank you.

10. Taxi Driver - You are not exactly in a position to say no. So you could get a smelly person, a rude person, or someone who wants to go 100 miles away.

11. Day Care Employee - While I used to love children, I have since grown to not love them so much. And the thought of being around screaming, crying, fighting, pooping children all day long who are not even your own... not a chance.

And on that note... I will be done. If you are any of the above positions... more power to you. I would not want to do them, but it does not mean I don't respect the person who does. So... share your not-so-dream job with me by posting a comment below.

An Affair to Remember

Oh, Tiger, Tiger, Tiger. How dumb can you be? Famous people should not cheat. It is never kept a secret and the public ALWAYS finds out about it. And by keeping it a secret... you are making it worse.

That said... why does anyone have an affair? I will never understand it. Perhaps because I am in a loving and committed relationship, but I just do not understand when people cheat. Are they not getting enough from their spouse? Then talk about it. Are they no longer in love? Then get a divorce. But don't cheat. It is not okay and it just makes matters worse. Last night's episode of Private Practice showed a couple who cheated on each other and knew about it, but in the end still loved each other. Whatever... I guess you can say, to each their own. And on last night's re-run of Will & Grace, Leo was cheating on Grace. He said he did not mean for it to happen, but it did. Well, don't let it happen. It's not that hard.

Cheaters never prosper. You have heard it before. At games... and at life. And once a cheater, always a cheater. If they cheated, they will do it again. And if they were with someone else, and they cheated on that person with you, guess what... you are going to get cheated on too. So... let's all honor those commitments we made and keep the lovin' at home. If you can't do that, then you are not with the right person.

Damn Bikers

I hate, loathe, despise, detest, and cannot stand bikers in the street. It is one of those things that causes me road rage. I truly in my heart of hearts want to hit them with my car. The funny thing is... I am actually in a good mood today. :)

Okay, bikers... you have bike paths and bike lanes for a reason.... USE THEM!!!!! There is hard earned tax dollars that were spent to give you a separate but equal space. Yes, I know apartheid ended, but not on our streets. Oh screw it... bikes are not equal... I hate you.

Why do they have to drive in the street? They cannot go the same speed, obviously. And, to make matters worse... they infringe on our coveted road but then do not even bother to pay attention to the laws, like stopping at a stop sign. They also do not wait their turn... they glide on up the right hand side of all the waiting cars to breeze through the stop signs.

So, dear bikers... if you insist on taking my space, and I would rather you didn't, I am going to insist that you pay attention to the law. Stop at signs, wait your turn, signal, and all of the other things that we get ticketed for if we do not do. That said... I would much prefer you to go on the bike bath or into the bike lane... just stay off the roads!!!!!!

Thankful

In this season of Thanksgiving, it is appropriate to talk about all that I am thankful for. I also need to give a shout out to "Anonymous" whose comment on a previous blog post prompted this one. So... whoever you are... I am thankful for your suggestion, for starters. :)

The things I am most thankful for in my life...

- Chad - While I am thankful for all of my family, Chad is my heart and soul, the love of my life, and for those of you who know the word, my b'sheret. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I would be this happy. So I am EXTREMELY thankful for the love of my life and being able to grow old with him.

- Family - When all is lost, you always have your family... and mine is the best. We have always been a very tight clan, and that is just how I like it. I love the time we spend together and am very thankful for all of them.

- Friends - I know this is an obvious list, but it is who I am thankful for. My friends mean the world to me, and while I do not have hundreds of friends, I have a very small group of best friends and we would all do anything for each other. I am very thankful for them.

- Job - In this day and age, I am extremely thankful to have my job. And not only to have a job, but one I love as much as I do. Yesterday as I was leaving work, I was thinking about how great it is to love your job and enjoy the people you work with.

- Money - Okay, so that sounds petty, and the truth is, I do not have much of it, but the money I do have, I am thankful for. Yes, it allows me to take vacations and by things I need, but it also allows me to do for others and donate to my favorite charities, thus giving to those who cannot afford it.

- Health - While I am not the poster child for health, I am thankful for what I have. In preparation for my wedding, I have pledged that this is the year I am going to get healthier. I want to live a long, happy, and healthy life with Chad, so now is the time to get this body in shape. I've only got one body... time to take care of it.

- Freedom - We live in a world where not everyone is free. I am extremely thankful to live in the USA and have my freedom. While not all of us are free to do whatever we would like (i.e. get married legally), it is still a pretty great country we live in.

- Charley - My baby boy. He is the sweetest and cutest dog there ever was. No matter what, he loves me unconditionally and is always so excited to see me. He depends on me for things like food, water, bathing, etc., but I depend on him for all the love he gives back to me.

And now... a few silly things I am thankful for...

- DVR - I just got DVR a few weeks ago, and now I do not know how I ever lived without it. It is AWESOME!!!

- Reality TV - I have to DVR something. The Amazing Race, Survivor, and Big Brother top the list.

- Vacations - Anyone who knows me, knows that I live to travel and go on vacation. Next big vacation is mine and Chad's 10-night cruise in February.

- Internet - Hello?!?! This is obvious. How would we get by without it. And how would I shop and buy things?!?!

- Jake Gyllenhaal - Enough said!

And of course, a special thank you to all of my readers. I appreciate you reading my updates and always sharing your comments with me. Happy Thanksgiving everyone and please feel free to let me know what you are thankful for by leaving your comment below.

Meeting with the Rabbi

So first of all... thanks to those of you who offered suggestions on what to write. I will use some of them coming up. Second, Chad and I met with the Rabbi last night... he apparently also reads my blog, so shout out to Rabbi Shavit-Lonstein!

Our meeting was great. We started to really talk about how the ceremony will look. As you know, Chad and I have been big fans of the Rabbi from the beginning of this. He has been in our corner 100% and has truly worked hard, not only on our behalf, but for other GLBT members of the congregation.

One of the things we talked about was the commitment piece of the ceremony. In a typical Jewish wedding, the man and woman are legally bound to each other and would need a "git" to end it. Because we cannot do that, the Rabbi wants to do a different type of commitment for us, saying that in the eyes of God, Chad and I are committed to each other. I hope I am getting this right. :)

Because parts of the shevah brachot are also specific to men and woman (such as Adam and Eve), in our next meeting, we are going to go through the shevah brachot together to determine if they are right for us, or if we should make some changes. The beauty of Judaism... it is constantly evolving.

For the circles, we will do it like every other couple at Temple of Aaron... one of us will do 3 circles, then the other will do 3 circles, and then we will do one together. We both want to stomp on the glass, so we will need to find a big enough, yet thin enough one to break. The week before we will do an auf ruf, so everyone can shower us with sweetness.

Overall, as we have said from the beginning, for the most part, the ceremony will look like a typical Jewish wedding. Yes, there will be some subtle differences, but overall, we are extremely excited as our 10-10-10 date is now less than a year away.

Writer's Block

Oy... I have no idea what to write. I have been racking my brain, trying to come up with a blog topic, and I've got nothing. I have even asked other people to give me a topic... they have nothing too. I feel bad. I know I have a loyal following of readers, and I truly appreciate that. But I know I let you down each time you log onto my blog and there is nothing new. So... what should I write about?

I could drag this blog out and talk about how I have nothing to talk about. But that is boring, annoying, and somewhat redundant. So, the blog powers now shift to you. I need you to give me some ideas. I will gladly impart my wisdom or share thoughts and offer opinions on almost anything. But I need ideas. So... leave me a comment by clicking "comment" below and offer some ideas of what I should write about. Those whose ideas I use, will get credit in the blog.

So Soon?

Things are starting to happen earlier and earlier. For example, while Halloween was still going on, all of the stores started to hint at Christmas. It's like they let it slowly creep in. They would start with just one rack of red, white, and green lights. Then they added ornaments, then big balls, soon Santa was appearing, and finally we had full blown Christmas. Literally, on November 1st I was in stores, and Halloween was gone as if it meant nothing to all of those kids last night, and BOOM... time for Christmas.

Have we no respect for Thanksgiving? What about Veteran's Day? And don't even get me started on Chanukah! I just cannot believe that we not only start to bring things for Christmas out in October, but come November 1st, it is all Christmas, all the time. We are still mourning the loss of summer... hell, I want my fall back. But to just jump into winter like that is mean, thoughtless, and down right rude!

Today the Mall of America started putting up their holiday display and getting ready for hundreds of kids to sit on Santa's lap. I really think this needs to hold out until after Thanksgiving. one holiday at a time people!

Along with that, another thing that is getting earlier is the start time for Black Friday. Door busters used to be at 8:00am, then they moved it back to 6:00am, and not long after it was a HUGE deal to open the doors at 5:00am. Well, we always have to out-do ourselves, so now the doors are open the night before. When you are still stuffed with turkey and well, stuffing, you head off to get in line for the stores that open at 11:00pm Thursday night. First, it is not fair to your employees, second, it is not fair to those people who are trying to digest and just want a good night sleep. There is nothing wrong with door busters at 8:00am... the same crazy people will still be in line.

So in the hustle and bustle and frazzle of the season... let's take a moment to slow down, and enjoy the time we have and the current holiday. Before soon, we will be frozen, covered from head to toe like a Muslim woman, teeth chattering, and warming up the car before we start to drive. Let's just enjoy our fall weather and holidays and not be so rushed to jump head first into winter.

A Fake

So last week I was watching "The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" on TV and it got me reminiscing. Suddenly, I remembered one of my all-time favorite movies, "Race for Your Life Charlie Brown." For anyone who has ever seen it, it is awesome. It is a feature-length Peanuts movie about going to camp and this big boat race. Such a great movie. Well, my quest to own the movie began.

I went and looked around online. There were a lot of VHS copies, but not many on DVD. Finally, I found some on DVD. They ranged in price, but of course, I wanted the cheapest. I found a guy who was selling a "brand new" DVD for $7.99. I got really excited, and bought one. I actually tried to buy two, one for my sister, but he only had one copy. So, I bought it.

The DVD arrived at my house the other day... total knock-off. The guy gets an A for effort, but it is the fakest looking copy I have ever seen. He made the cover on his color printer... very poor quality. He burned a sticker onto the DVD... does not come close to looking real.

Clearly, I am pissed at this point. So, I go onto the website and I filed a complaint that this is a fake copy and I want a real one. Thus far, the guy has not responded... he has a few weeks to do so. My guess is this is not the first time someone has filed a claim against him. I will keep you posted as to what happens. I am a bit nervous that he could win this claiming that he never said it was an original copy. And he will be right about that. But if I threaten him with copyright laws.... we'll see what happens next. I will let you know once I hear from the guy.

I'm Over Him/Her

Often times the media hangs onto people and their stories far too long. Sometimes it gets to the point where you just want to say "Enough already... who cares?!?!" And thus... my next blog entry. Below are some of the people whose stories I am over, and am totally sick of hearing about.

1. Jon & Kate Gosselin - These people are not even celebrities and yet they are getting more attention that anyone else out there. Move on!!!

2. Paris Hilton - She is so 2007.

3. Jonas Brothers - They are not cute so what is all the screaming about, ladies?

4. Michael Jackson - He is dead... let the man lie in peace.

5. Jessica Simpson - Bored!

6. Khloe Kardashian / Lamar Odom - Does anyone know who these people are or what they have done?

7. Brad Pitt / Angelina Jolie - We get it... they are the perfect couple. They are also old news.

8. Jennifer Aniston - I love her, but stop trying to tie her to every male in Hollywood.

And that is it. A short blog entry, I realize, but one that was inspired by people.com, usmagazine.com, and more. Feel free to leave a comment below with the people and stories you are sick of hearing about.

RSVP Already

I will never understand people who do not respond (or RSVP) to something they were invited to. Granted, sometimes you need not reply, as it has not been requested, but when it has been asked for... you respond!

Take our Halloween party for example. Last month we invited everyone to the party. I will grant you, we sent it out early, but that is because we wanted people to save the date. So... not everyone RSVP'd right away. I can make my peace with that. But then last week I sent a reminder to everyone, and still people have not RSVP'd. As of right now, there are 14 "maybe" replies and 18 who have not even done that. 18 people have not said either way... THE PARTY IS TOMORROW!!!!!. I find that extremely rude. If you are invited to a party, have the courtesy to respond. A simple "Thanks for the invite, but we cannot make it" suffices just fine. Those throwing the party plan on a certain number of people being there based on RSVPs. You want to have enough food and drink, but you also do not want to spend hundreds of dollars over if people are not showing up. It is really very simple... just say no. Especially in this day and age when it is as easy as the click of a button on Facebook. If you are coming, say it. If you are not, tell us that too. Anything less is just plain rude!

And don't even get me started on the ass-clown who RSVP'd "no" when he has every intention of coming. He said that he "says no to all of those requests." Then don't come if you say no.

Okay... people are annoying me today. Sorry, but if you go to the effort to invite someone to a party, they should at least have the courtesy to say "no thank you." That is called manners!

And so help me God if people are invited to the wedding and they do not RSVP. They will see me in hell and we can talk about it then! You've heard of Bridezilla... well, meet her big brother Groomzilla!

Colorado in Review

As always, it was a GREAT trip. We had so much fun, and I am so glad Chad got to go to Colorado to see the mountains and all, and also Lorrie's house before she sells it. So, here is a re-cap of the trip broken down by day.

Thursday
Thursday night we got to the airport. When we checked in, all was okay. And then the shit hit the fan. The dumbass VP (Joe Biden) was in town for his $7600/person fundraiser. Well, apparently when he is ready to leave, the entire airport shuts down. That's right... no planes in, and no planes out for over an hour. Thankfully, we were on the ground. I feel sorry for the poor people who were circling in the air for an hour. Absolutely ridiculous. When the ass-clown finally took off, EVERYONE cheered and clapped. That should not even be allowed to happen. So, after a couple hour delay, we finally arrived in Denver, drove to Greeley, got settled in, and went to bed.

Friday
Friday morning we woke up early. I think we only got about 5 hours of sleep. We were in a small bed and it was hot, so we just could not sleep anymore. But it was okay, because we got to get our day started early. After we all showered and got ready, we packed the car to head into the mountains and Estes Park. First, we made a few stops, including a run back to the house as Lorrie forgot her swimsuit (which we never needed anyway).

Our drive in was pretty uneventful. We kept stopping so Chad could get pics of the mountains. It was pretty cute to watch how excited he was. He got some GREAT pics!!! Once we got to Estes, we checked into our cabin at Timber Creek Chalet (http://www.rockymtnresorts.com/locations/timber-creek-chalets/). It was AWESOME!!! Shout out to AP for not only finding it, but paying for it as well. The place comfortably slept 8, though we only had 6. Chad and I had our own room with a king size bed. AP had her own queen bed, but shared a room with Emory and Lorrie in the other queen. Kyle slept on the queen size futon. We also had two bathrooms, a full kitchen, a fireplace, and access to hot tubs. The place was AWESOME!!!

After we checked in and unloaded the car, we continued the drive into the mountains. We went to Rocky Mountain National Park and had a picnic of Honeybaked Ham sandwiches. I had the turkey.... it was an amazing sandwich. After we ate, we did a little hiking through some terrain and took great pics. After that, we continued on up the mountains as high as we could go. We were around 10,000 feet. It was pretty fun. On our way down, we stopped by this place called Beaver Creek (I think) still in the park. We came upon a heard of Elk that was amazing. They were extremely close to us. So close that one came and licked the hood of the car for a few minutes. Chad got a video of that. One of the Bucks was extremely horny and trying to mount the ladies, but they were having no part of it. It was damn funny to watch.

After that it was back to the cabin where we met Emory and her dog Wrigley, and Kyle and Lorrie's dog Duncan. Yup, 6 people and two Golden Retrievers in one cabin. We headed to dinner at a place called Dunraven Inn for dinner. It was excellent Italian food. Homemade everything and Lorrie said probably the best meal she has ever had in Estes. One cool thing about the place... they have decorated $1 bills lining the wall of the restaurant. They estimate over $16,000 on their walls. We all decorated one on behalf of mine and Chad's engagement. It was fun to do.

After dinner it was back to the cabin for a little nosh, a board game called Dirty Minds (highly entertaining) and then off to bed.

Saturday
Saturday morning we woke up, got ready, took the dogs for a walk, had breakfast, woke up the rest of the clan, and off we went. We spent the entire day shopping in downtown Estes. It was so fun to go into all of the stores. We really enjoyed ourselves. And the weather was GORGEOUS!!!! After we did all of downtown, we headed back to Greeley. We went to the grocery store, bought a bunch of appetizers, made those for dinner, played Scattergories, watched Roseanne, and went to bed. We were all exhausted and went to bed early!

Sunday
Sunday we were going into Boulder. We got ready, said goodbye to Emory, and loaded up the car again. If you are thinking, "My word you spent a lot of time in the car," you are right. That is always the case when we are in Colorado, because there is nothing to do in Greeley, but we are just an hour or so from Denver, Estes Park, Boulder, and Fort Collins. We went to a restaurant called "The Sink" where lots of CU kids hang out. The place was a really fun environment, but the food sucked and our extremely drunk waitress was a moron. But it gave us a lot to laugh at. Lexie and John were with us for this day, so Chad finally got to meet the entire clan. We had a blast with them.

After lunch, we went on the Celestial Seasonings factory tour. It was okay, but we made our own fun... teabagging anyone. :) lol After the tour, we bought a lot of stuff in their store, and then headed to Pearl Street. This is where we did a lot more shopping. Tons of cute stores including this AWESOME 80's candy store where Chad and I both got old school metal lunch boxes. I got a Smurfs one... he got a Sock Monkey one. So fun.

After walking around for what seemed like hours, we finally had dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. After that, we said goodbye to Kyle, Lexie, and John, and headed back for our last night in Greeley. We basically packed, hung out a bit, and went to bed. We had to wake up at 5:00 to get to the airport on Monday.

That was pretty much the trip. We had a blast, as we always do in Colorado, and I am already looking forward to the next vacation.

Another Trip

Hi everyone. As you know, pretty much my favorite thing to do is travel. So... I am off on another trip. This time we are going to Colorado. AP is going tonight, and Chad and I go in tomorrow night. We will stay with Lorrie, and Chad will finally get to meet the rest of her clan and see the mountains. One night we rented a house and will be staying in the mountains... Estes Park. Should be super fun. I will fill you in on Monday or Tuesday when I return. Until then... be good.

One Year and Counting

The old saying is true... time flies when you are having fun. It is hard to believe that one year from tomorrow, Chad and I will get married. It is even harder to believe that we have known each other for less than a year. And just six weeks after we met, we were engaged. But... when you know, you know. There is no doubt in my mind that Chad is my soul mate, b'sheret, best friend... my heart & soul. I never in my wildest dreams could imagine I would find someone who makes me this happy and for whom I am thankful for every day. I am tearing up just writing this. But when I was searching for "him," I never thought this was possible, and I know why... because I had not yet met Chad.

Enough with the sappy crap... we are getting married one year from tomorrow!!!!!!!!! I am so excited. Growing up, I always thought I would marry a woman and have kids... you know, the way it is "supposed to be." But I am so excited to be marrying Chad and doing so in the synagogue where I grew up. True, it is not a legal marriage, but to the naked eye, it will look like a typical wedding. Not only did we get the date and place we want to get married, but we got the photographer, florist, videographer, caterer, and DJ we wanted too (yes, a DJ... neither of us like bands). For those of you curious, please check out our wedding webpage at http://www.theknot.com/ourwedding/AlexLocke&ChadHewitt

So that is pretty much all I wanted to say. This weekend, I think Chad and I are going to come up with our master list of everything that needs to happen. From the big things like linens, invitations, wedding rings, and registering, to the smaller things like place cards and wedding party gifts. We will do a column of what needs to be done, who is responsible, when it needs to get done, and when it is completed. Hopefully our hyper-organization will make it a flawless event and a night to remember.

Chicago Memories

Okay, I know my blog posts have been a little lacking lately. My sincere apologies. But, I have really been without inspiration. If anyone has any potential topics for me, by all means share. Shout out to Allison who inspired this blog post.

It has already been 8 years since I lived in Chicago... 8 years!!! A lot has happened in that time, but during the year and a half I lived there, I have some wonderful memories. So, below are some of those memories. They may not be my favorite, but none the less are memories. I also have WAY more than could fit here, so I may do a follow up to this blog at some point... especially if no one gives me any potential topics. Okay... on with the show...

- Danny and I started out living in this beautiful palace we shared with a roommate who we will call Gladys Pussman. The place was gorgeous, but was way the hell out. So, we moved to the ghetto basement that is 827 Wrightwood. Another shout out to Allison who told us about it. It was a dump, but it was cheap and allowed us to live with Allison, Dina, and Jill.

- In that ghetto apartment I remember a lot related to food... Sunday night dinners, Pudding Parties, cookies that I made if the girls bought the supplies, Danny's popcorn, having Aunt Charlotte over for dinner, and no garbage disposal to send any of this down.

- Continuing on with the theme of Allison... she and I worked together at LCI. This was, by far, the most unprofessional business you have EVER seen. I won't begin to get into the personnel, but the place was a joke. My all time favorite... we moved into a new building, and for our Grand Opening, we not only made all of our reps supply the food (we did not provide or serve anything), we told them what they needed to bring. That place was UNREAL. No big shock... they closed a year or so after I left.

- Okay... one more thing about Allison... she and I used to take walks on Sunday afternoon. We would often wind up at the Lincoln Park Zoo.

- Danny has always been a wonderful driver (please note sarcasm). Not only did he regularly clip other cars, but one time he did and his front bumper got pulled off. To this day, it is in the basement of our Ashland apartment.

- We used to get our hair cut at a place called We Care Hair. Good lord!!! To make matters worse, when we moved into our ghetto apartment, we were poor, so we furnished the kitchen at the Salvation Army. No lie!

- There was an awesome bar in Boys Town called Voltaire. We would go there, order dessert, have drinks, and watch their Cabaret show. So fun! We even took our mom's there when they came in for Mom's Weekend.

- One thing I definitely do not miss... the train. There was nothing worse that being cramped into those ridiculously hot cars with your face smashed into some tall guy's armpit. I love driving to work!

- It was here that "my girls" introduced me to Popeye's Chicken. I must admit... it is delish!

- Danny's dating life was another great thing about Chicago. Although that could be it's own post.

- And my final memory for this post... being in the audience of the Jerry Springer show when Danny got into it with one of the "guests." Oh no he didn't!

Ahh yes, good times. Feel free to leave any of your Chicago memories below as a comment, and also please give me ideas for future blog posts.

Talking on the Phone

I hate talking on the phone, I hate talking on the phone, I HATE TALKING ON THE PHONE!!! Let me be clear... I hate talking on the phone. It's funny... when I was growing up, I loved talking on the phone. I would see my friends at school, and then as soon as we got home, we would talk on the phone. We would talk ALL night too. Eventually, Missy and I got our own phone line so my parents could still use the phone too. Well, I think I used up all of my "minutes" back then because now... I despise the phone.

I don't like talking at home on personal calls. I most certainly do not like talking on the phone at work for business. I ALWAYS prefer to e-mail people rather than talk on the phone. For one, you have a record of what was said. And two... who wants to talk?!?!?! I know e-mail is impersonal when it comes to business, but it is so much more convenient, and truly, a time saver. Talking on the phone takes FOREVER. Especially on a personal call. No one calls, asks their question, and then hangs up. Oh no... they call, you ask how each other are, you talk about what you did for the day, what you are doing coming up, ask about family, and yadda yadda yadda.

I know I am sounding SO negative, and probably like an asshole, I just don't like talking on the phone. People have commented when I am on the phone that I sound busy or distracted.... it could be that. Or... perhaps I just don't want to talk at that time. Just because you want to talk does not mean I want to then... or am even available.

Okay... this blog could go on forever. I will just leave it at the fact that I hate talking on the phone, and if you are offended... to bad. I know you are going to call me anyway.

Cruise Preview

It is hard to believe but I am already preparing for another cruise. I know, I know... I just went on one. But as I have said MANY times, I am a self-proclaimed "cruise whore." This cruise will be over Valentine's Day. Chad and I are going together... 10-nights on Holland America's Noordam. I am EXTREMELY excited. I actually already cruised Alaska on this ship, but it is a gorgeous ship and I am excited to be on it again. Especially for 10 nights!! This time we are going to...

- Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Their private island)
- Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos
- Samana, Dominican Republic
- Kralendijk (Bonaire), Antilles
- Willemstad (Curacao), Antilles
- Oranjestad, Aruba

Of those, I have only been to Aruba before, and luckily, it is my favorite port from all my cruises. Last night, Chad and I booked three shore excursions, so I thought I would share them with you now.

Half Moon Cay - Private Cabana
Enjoy the ultimate in luxury during your stay on Half Moon Cay with the use of your own private cabana. Board the first tender ashore, or have priority tender use, to maximize your time by being the first guests to arrive. For your comfort, you will find your cabana outfitted with a refrigerator, ceiling fan, air conditioner, table and chairs inside, and deck chairs and a misting shower on the private terrace. You will be provided with fresh fruit, vegetables with dip, and chips and salsa to snack on as well as an assortment of soft drinks and bottled water to quench your thirst. Beach towels, floating mats, and snorkel gear are also included for your use throughout the day.

Grand Turk - Power Snorkeling
Board a comfortable air-conditioned bus that will take you to one of Grand Turk’s beautiful, white-sand beaches. Your guide will provide you with snorkel equipment and a handheld Power Snorkel Unit. After you hear brief safety and use instructions, you will take off for a snorkeling experience of a lifetime, gliding gracefully through the water, soaring over beautiful coral reefs. Afterwards, enjoy sunbathing, swimming or snorkeling from the beach. On your Power Snorkel Adventure, you will explore reefs farther from shore by simply touching the unit to go and releasing to stop. This is an adventure not to be missed.

Willemstad - Jewish Heritage Tour
This tour explores Curacao's Jewish heritage and visits the Western Hemisphere's oldest synagogue. Board your air-conditioned transportation and drive to Willemstad's Scharloo District, home to old colonial mansions built by the island's Jewish merchants. Intolerance and the Inquisition drove Iberian Jews first to Brazil, then to Curacao. The island's thin volcanic soil made conventional farming a near impossibility, forcing the immigrants to turn to commerce. Visit Beth Haim Cemetery, consecrated in 1659, and a repository of superb funerary art. Tour Landhouse Bloemhof with its excellent collections of art and artifacts from Curacao's Jewish past. Your final destination is Mikve Emmanuel Israel, the oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere, built in 1732.

Unfortunately, the cruise is still four and a half months away, but I am EXTREMELY excited to go.

I Don't Get It

Some things just baffle me... I don't get it, I don't understand, and I never will. So, here now are a few things I just cannot comprehend...

- If you get in a fight with someone at work, talk it through, involve the supervisors or HR. If it still does not work, quit... but don't kill your co-worker. Hello?!?! That lab guy at Yale is nutty... obviously!

- If you plan to attend something you are invited to, please say "yes" to your invite, not "no" when you have every intention of coming. If everyone who planned to attend also said "no" we would assume no one is coming to the party. DUMB!

- Oppressed women in those ridiculous religious get-ups with their head covered and all. I understand it is your culture, but this is the year 2009... you are equal to your husband. Put on some shorts and make him cook you dinner!

- Twitter... it's like cyber-stalking. And the word "tweet" conjures up way too many images.

- Black jeans... you are not fooling anyone. We know they are jeans... you are not dressed-up, and neither am I in my blue jeans. We are equal.

- Jean shorts on men... enough said.

- People not responding to e-mails or voice mails. That is just plain rude!!! If someone leaves you a message or sends you a note, it almost always requires a response... give them one. I hate when people ignore those. Actually... I just hate being ignored, period.

- Iowa... why would anyone live there?!?! Okay, I know Minnesota is not much better, but come on.

- Children... while they are sweet, and cute, and fun to look at, they are also expensive, needy, and loud. I realize this makes me sound like a cranky, crotchety old man, but thank God Chad and I agree 100% on the "no kids" plan!

- People who write G-d instead of God. Okay, I admit, I did it too for the longest time. Then I asked my Rabbi. Writing out God is perfectly fine... it is not the holy, sacred way we write it. Then, and only then, are you to bury it. So go ahead... join me in writing God.

- Flight Attendants... why are they SO snobby. I understand all the gay boys want to be like you when they grow up, but minus some safety training and a CPR certification, you are a glorified waitress in the sky. Oy, I hope none of my readers are flight attendants because I am going to hear about this one.

There are MANY more I could write, but I will leave it at that for now. Perhaps I will do a "part 2" to this entry at a later date. For now, please feel free to share the things you do not understand by adding a comment below.

We Remember

Today we remember all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. It is hard to believe that it has already been 8 years! 8 years since kids last saw their parents, 8 years since people selflessly fought terror on their plane, 8 years since the world changed.

I, like the rest of the world, remember exactly where I was. I was in my room getting ready to go to work. I watched the Today show as they said a plane hit the World Trade Center. Then they said terrorism, and I remember thinking... not EVERYTHING is terrorism. Sometimes it is just an accident. Then they said another one hit... and I realized they were right. Terrorists robbed people of their lives, and stole freedom from those of us lucky enough to have survived. I went to work, and we all gathered in the conference room glued to the TV. Just then, we got a call from the "home office" in Detroit telling us to go home because Chicago would be the next city attacked and they did not want to be responsible for us. Are they really headed towards us next? Would I make it home safely? Luckily I did, as did most Americans, but over 3,000 people did not make it home that day. Today we remember them.

Terrorism is a sad fact of life. We know it will happen again. We do not know when or where, but we know that once again we hope to be one of the lucky ones.

If you'd like, please share your thoughts, stories, or "where I was" moment with me by posting a comment below.

I'm Back

My apologies for ignoring my blog. Well, it's not that I have been ignoring it so much as I really could not update it. A week ago Saturday, I was getting dressed and my back went out. The nerve to get dressed, I know. That had me laid up all weekend. Then, I went back to work on Tuesday, and Wednesday I was out again. I went to the doctor and he said no more work for the week. Luckily, Percocet and Flexaril are my friends. :) They got me all better in time for Chad's family to come visit.

Jason, Kerry, Rylee, Reece, and Sue (Kerry's mom) got in Thursday night. They were here all weekend and left Monday morning. It was an exhausting, but really fun weekend. In that time, we went to the Fair twice (once with Chad's family and once after they left), to Como Zoo, had the Amazing Race, went to dinner at my mom's, a BBQ at AP's house, and we even managed to sneak in a little Savoy Pizza.

All in all it was a good time. Now, my back is better, I am back at work, and Danny comes in on Friday. Then the next week is Rosh Hashanah, then Yom Kippur, then Colorado, then Halloween, and soon it will be Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, mine and Chad's 1-year anniversary, and then THE CRUISE!!!!!!!!!!! So much to do and so little time. But I love having all of this going on... it makes the time fly by.

Fun at the Fair

So my last post was things to eat at the State Fair. Obviously, that is the most important thing to do at the Fair. Still, there are other fun things to do, and so I will share those with you now as well.

- Eat lots of food - Sorry, it had to be said.

- The Giant slide - I have not done it for a few years, but always loved it as a kid. Perhaps it is time to relive my childhood.

- Visit the butterheads - Yup, you gotta see 'em.

- Skyride - I like the old one where you get in your own little capsule, but the new one that is like a chair lift is even better. It is open and really fun to go to that side of the fair that no one ever gets to.

- Visit the KARE barn - When I was younger, I would go and sit there for hours... hoping one day I would anchor myself from the fair. Then, I grew up and worked there... no thanks! :) But still fun to visit, and the KARE staff are the best.

- Miracle of Birth Center - This has to be one of my favorite things to do. I love seeing all the little baby animals.

- Ride Ye Old Mill - The old fashioned water ride. It is sort of a make out ride, and Chad has never been on it.

- Fun Houses in the Midway - I used to love these as a kid.

- Haunted House - It used to be a lot more fun when they could grab you and really scare the crap out of you. Damn sexual harassment... takes the fun out of everything.

- Talent Show - If you can stay awake that long, it is fun to see the many different homegrown talents.

I have no doubt there are many more things I missed. Please feel free to share your favorites as well.

Fair Fare

Well, if you can believe it... it is time again for the Great Minnesota Get Together. Of course, I am talking about none other than the Minnesota State Fair. I don't really think people outside of Minnesota have a concept for what this really means. For how excited we get.... for how we look forward to this time of year every season. I love summer, but the best part of it ending is the State Fair. So, really everyone goes to the Fair to eat. Fattys, skinny minnies, and diabetics alike... we all eat ourselves full at the State Fair. So now, a list of my favorite foods I am looking forward to. And please, do not freak out when you don't see Cheese Curds on my list. And away we go...

- Pork Chop on a stick - How Jewish of me, I know. Porky's Delight was the best, but they are long gone. So the new ones are good... just not AS good.

- Danielson & Daughters Onion Rings - Only one booth; right outside the food building. There are no other onion rings like it.

- Orange Treet - Same as an Orange Julius, but a different name. You have to drink this while eating the onion rings above.

- Fudge Puppies - A recent addition to my list; Basically, a waffle dipped in chocolate covered in whipped cream. How bad could that be?!?!

- Sweet Martha's - A good old fashioned standby. I do not even like milk, but you have to finish off your cookies with a glass of milk.

- Pickle Dogs - Only one booth; just before the Midway. It is a pickle, covered with cream cheese, and wrapped in pastrami. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! And it can only be topped off with a glass of grape Kool-Aid.

- Sweet Roll - Inside the Food Building, and if you really want to do it up, ask for "extra goop!"

- Dippin' Dots - I know they are everywhere now, but I still love 'em and always make room for them.

- Homemade Peanut Roll - A delicious snack I always buy and take home for later.

And now a few honorable mentions that I enjoy, but likely won't have...

- French Fries - You know the big yellow booth!

- Corn Dog - I used to eat a million, not anymore.

- Sparkling Apple Cider Float - Enjoyable, but I need to save room in my tummy.

- Dairy Building Malt - Good, but you can always get a good malt somewhere outside of the Fair.

And finally a list of things people like, that I just never got into...

- Cheese Curds - They are alright, but not my thing.

- Mini Donuts - I usually eat one, and then am good for another year.

- Turkey Leg - Those things are disgusting and barbaric looking.

- Foot Long Hot Dog - What... a regular one isn't big enough at the Fair?

- Roasted Corn - You chew it up, swallow, and it comes out whole. No thanks... not for me!

Well, I hope I did not miss anything, but with all those delicious delicacies, I am bound to have forgotten something. For those of you who have been to the fair, please leave a comment with your favorite Fair Fare. Come on.... you know you want to.

Dream Job

I love my job... I have said that from the moment I started working here. But it is also fun sometimes to fantasize. So... here are a list of some of my not-so-realistic dream jobs. Other than being a cruise director, they are in no particular order:

1. Cruise Director - It does not get more fun than that.

2. Talk Show Host - The Alex Locke Show.... come on, you would tune it.

3. Today Show Anchor - This is Today with Meredith Vieira and Alex Locke. Nice ring, huh?!?!

4. Doctor - I am definitely not dedicated enough to school, but how amazing to help save lives!

5. Pilot - I think flying in the cockpit would be so fun.

6. Broadway Star - I wish I could open my mouth and just belt out a tune. Plus my name on the marquee would not be so bad.

7. Boy Band Member - I used to think I was the 6th missing guy from NSYNC.

8. Judge - How fun to throw the book at some of those asshole criminals out there?!?!

9. President - I would really only want this job for a day, and not a minute longer. WAY to stressful, but I think it would be fun to do for a little bit.

10. Dolphin Trainer - Something I ALWAYS wanted to do, and would still do it in a second.

Some of these are just plain fun, others amazing, and others are just so interesting. So... what would your dream job be?

Vaca All The Way

Per usual, I was talking about travelling yesterday. One of my co-workers said to me, "Have you ever been somewhere you haven't loved?" I realized.... no. Well, with the exception of Des Moines, Iowa... what a shit hole! Sure things have gone wrong in certain places, like Missy, Tom, AP, and I all getting carsick in the horrid mountains of St. Lucia. But on the whole... I LOVE to travel and thoroughly enjoy my time away.

My dream job, for a long time, has been a cruise director. Essentially, that is what I do now, only my ship doesn't sail. But I love getting out and seeing the world. Okay, maybe I just REALLY like tropical places, though Alaska was awesome too. But I digress... I love to travel, and love having that as my guilty pleasure and my way to spend my hard earned dollars.

In February, Chad and I are going on a 10-night cruise. This will be my longest one yet, and I am VERY excited about it. It will be on Holland America's Noordam (a ship I already cruised Alaska on) and we will be going to the following ports: Half Moon Cay, Turks & Caicos, Dominican Republic, Bonaire, Curacao, and Aruba. Of those, I have only been to Aruba, and it is my favorite of all the ports so far. Chad and I have a dream... one day we will move to the Caribbean and live in peace and quiet. Let's see if that ever happens.

Because I am a complete cruise whore, we also are doing a cruise for our Honeymoon. It will be to Hawaii. Both of us have always wanted to go to Hawaii and cruising (though not our original plan) allows us to go all over Hawaii for much cheaper than flying there and doing it on our own. We will be going on NCL America's Pride of America to Honolulu, Maui, Kuai, Kona, and Hilo. I can hardly wait... unfortunately, I have to wait... January 15, 2011.

Once those cruises are done, it is time to spread our wings and do an international cruise. My new destination that I desperately want to see is Santorini. Just google the images and you will see why I want to go there. Chad has also always wanted to do an Alaskan cruise, so we will certainly do that at some point to.

If only I had more time, and more money.... I would travel a lot more. Oh well, such is life. That said, I certainly appreciate what I have and am able to do.

Reliving the Dream

Well, I got home from Alumni Camp at Herzl, and it was AWESOME!!! First, it was so fun to be back. Second, it was great to share this part of my life with Chad. Now when I say "After Havdallah we will do Rad Hayom before we head to the Mo for Oneg," he will know exactly what that means. So here is a re-cap of the weekend...

Friday
The drive up to camp was pretty typical. That said... there are a lot of housing developments that have popped up. Some of the towns you drive through have also been built up. Of course, we stopped at the Drive-In for lunch. I had my favorite... hot fudge banana malt. It was as delish as I remember.

When we got to camp, we were greeted by a few people singing "Ay veynu shalom alechem." That set the tone for the weekend. We went up to our room, unpacked, and then we took our first walk around camp. We went to all of mine and Missy's cabins. I saw all of the plaques I made as a staff member with my campers in Vav, 17, 20, and 25 (not sure why we did not make one when I was an ozo for 7). I also showed Chad the ozo mo.... shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! We went into the haks and got pretty grossed out and then spent a little time at the Mercaz. Some things never change... like the beauty at the Mercaz. Other things do change... I used to be fine showering in the haks, now I would feel like a need a shower to clean off after showering in there.

After the tour, we relaxed and got ready for Shabbat. Everyone was dressed in white and we had the traditional Shabbat Caravan. It was so fun to be there again... it had been 12 years since I was last on staff. As always, the caravan ended at the flag circle. Though they no longer use the Canadian flag, or sing O Canada, we did for old times sake. Now, they use a Herzl flag and sing the Herzl song, which is pretty cool too. After a few flag songs, and lowering the flags, we headed to services. Unfortunately, due to the rain, we had services indoors, but they were still nice. Following services we had the traditional Herzl Shabbat dinner... matzo ball soup, salad, challah, chicken, and those little potato thingies.

When dinner was over, the lights went down, and we had our candlelight song session. It was so great!!!! I did miss seeing people walking through the aisles though. After dinner, we went to the staff mo, and it was time for Oneg. Essentially, we all sat around sharing favorite Herzl memories or hilarious stories. It was so fun just listening... and sharing a few as well. Chad said this was his favorite part of the weekend... though he truly loved the entire time and wants to go back again. Finally it was time for bed... Saturday was a BIG day.

Saturday
What better way to start a Saturday morning at camp then with an optional breakfast starring the sweet rolls. DELISH!!!! After breakfast we got showered and headed to services... again indoors due to rain. When services were over, it was time for rotations, and thankfully the sun was out. Chad and I did not do any one thing in particular... we watched and observed. We took another walk around camp. We went to the waterfront... damn there is a lot of beach. They say it is the lowest the lake has been in 37 years. Those who remember the lake would not believe what it looks like now. After some time at the waterfront, we went to ozo park and watched 30 year old men pretend to be 20 year-olds playing ultimate frisbee. That was highly entertaining, though I will say... some of 'em still have it. Next we went over to the Mercaz to watch all the people boating. It was a beautiful view. Finally, we went into Cabin 13 where I was Papa Ozo and we found on the wall all of the notes my ozos wrote me. It was so fun to see those and be reminded of that summer.

Next up... Picnic lunch with the addition of grilled cheese. We all wanted the picnic lunch experience, but were not willing to give up the yummy goodness that is grilled cheese. As soon as lunch was over, we started singing ozo songs. We went as far back as 1979 and did every year of ozo songs that had a representative at Alumni Camp. Thankfully, we did not do Kadimah songs!! After the songs, it was time to start with B-I-K-K-U-R-I-M... Bikkurim.

It began with a watermelon seed spitting contest, then ga-ga, and then the marathon which included a human pyramid, saltine whistling, b-ball free throws, the rock wall, the kadimah wall, walking an egg with a spoon, a lot of running, and so much more. After that, it was tug-o-war. We are just not as young as we once were. Everyone got pooped, so it was time for a break before finishing off with kickball. Bikkurim was a ton of fun!

Next we went and rested for a little bit before it was time for dinner. It was the traditional kugel, eggs, salad, and blintzes dinner followed by Eskimo Pies with peanut butter. Delish (how many times can I say that)!!! After dinner we were treated to a brief but funny version of 12 Gates. By then it was already time for evening program, which I was leading. We first did Comedy Sportz, then a sing down, and finally an awesome game of Aleph You Too. I have never seen a bra come off that fast!!!! After the games, it was time for the big announcement of who won Bikkurim. For once, I was on the winning Red team!!!! Face it, Blue always loses... another Herzl tradition.

Once evening program was over, it was time havdallah lead by the '99 ozrim. Then, it was time for the Pour House. Unfortunately, it is the post-tornado Pour House, but none the less we had a good time. I got my root beer in a frosty mug, did a little dancing, and had a fun night watching Stella take on NASCAR. When we got back to camp, it was a bonfire at the Ner Howie, then a little star gazing at the Mercaz before Chad and I got scared we were going to be eaten by a bear. So, we returned to the bonfire for a few minutes, and finally went to bed after 1:00. I have not stayed up that late for years.

Sunday
Sunday morning, we slept in past breakfast, bought $80 worth of Herzl regalia (and I still think I want one of those blankets) toured camp one last time where Chad took a picture of all my plaques and notes from my ozos, and with that, Alumni Camp was over.

It was truly an incredible weekend. I would do it again in a second, though I don't think it should be every year. I feel that might take away from it being a unique and special experience. So.... my recommendation is every five years, add one extra day, and cap it at 75, because anymore would lose the intimacy.

Economy

This economy sucks. I feel like we are spiraling out of control and no one knows when we will stop. Hopefully soon, and hopefully the repercussions are not as devastating as we think. But for now... things are not good.

Work
So many people are losing their jobs. For those that are lucky enough to keep their jobs, they are getting pay cuts, wage freezes, loss of benefits, and more.

Vacations
People cannot afford vacations anymore. You work hard at your job and are rewarded with time off. That time off should be spent doing something fun. But in this economy, it is hard to do. Disney raised the price to their parks on Sunday.... single day pass and multiple day passes. They did so because they reported a 26% loss. I have a piece of advice Disney... if you are losing money because no one is coming to the parks, don't raise the price. That won't bring in more people.

Cars
Cash for clunkers. It's a great program, really. But now there are threats of shutting it down because there isn't enough money. And just today, I got out of my car and saw a gorgeous Pontiac G6 convertible. Then it made me sad to know GM has shut down the Pontiac brand. Another poor sign of the economy. I had a Pontiac and loved it. Now... the whole line will be gone as if it never existed.

Theater
I love going to the theater... always have. But they are suffering too. It is almost a weekly occurrence that I get e-mails from Chanhassen practically begging people to come to their shows. One e-mail gave us 50% off tickets. Hello.... two for the price of one. That is crazy!!

Vendors
One of the caterers we had talked to for the wedding was not interested in giving us prices, menus, etc. because he was not sure they would be in business in October of 2010. Businesses are concerned they are going to have to shut their doors because no one is spending money.

I am not an economist, and do not even pretend to understand what the issues are. But come on... someone has to fix this problem. I know the Obama administration is doing everything they think they can, but certainly there has to be more that can be done. Drastic times call for drastic measures.

Old School Favorite Shows From the 80's

Okay, Logan.... this one is for you. Today I am flashing back to my favorite shows from when I was growing up in the 80's. How many of these shows did you enjoy too?

1. Facts of Life - Classic.... and where George Clooney got his start.

2. Different Strokes - What you talking about Willis?

3. Golden Girls - Always a favorite and they still air repeats on Lifetime.

4. Jem - Maybe this cartoon is what made me gay.

5. Silver Spoons - I always wanted to have a train to ride in my house.

6. Night Court - Come on... a guy named Bull.

7. Alf - Who didn't want to have an alien live with them?

8. Small Wonder - It made me want to be a robot.

9. Growing Pains - Mike Sever's best friend's name was Boner... enough said.

10. Punky Brewster - How cute is she?

11. Charles in Charge - Kind of a tool, but a good show.

12. Out of this World - I still wish I could freeze time by putting my fingers together.

The "blahs"

Today I have a case of the blahs. I actually have for a few days. I really think I am just run down and tired. When you are worn out, you want something comforting. So here now is a list of some of my favorite old comfort foods:

1. French toast

2. Cinnamon and sugar toast

3. Hard boiled egg on toast

4. Egg salad

5. Mac n' Cheese

6. Chicken a la king

7. Chicken soup

8. Ice cream

Okay, that is it. I tried to get to 10, but either these are really my favorites and I do not have two more, or I am so "blah" that I cannot think clearly. In any case... numbers 5 and 7 definitely have to be my mother's. Any other, simply wouldn't do.

Dumb Kids

Please read the link below before reading this blog update.

http://www.kare11.com/news/whatsup/whatsup_article.aspx?storyid=820135&catid=333

Are you kidding me? Those kids should be punished severely. The town should not be throwing them a parade for being back home, grandpa... they should be smacking those kids until their asses turn red... and I am not even someone who believes in spanking!

They thought they would get in trouble? Ya huh! They could hear their parents and police yelling for them, but they ignored the calls? Are you kidding?!?! Thankfully they plan to be grounded which is exactly what should happen. Those kids probably made their families sick with fear, and cost their city thousands of dollars in search equipment, man power, etc. Those kids are lucky they aren't within my reach.

Oh, and by the way... next time there are lost children... ask a TV reporter to look for them on a curb, in broad daylight, 200 feet from their house. I bet they will get good results! Way to go police department. Leave it to the TV journalists to do your dirty work.

Bad Business

First we had the homophobic photographer, and now this...

Chad and I did some searching around for florists. That business is definitely word of mouth, so we contacted four different places. Of those, only one responded. It happened to be the florist my sister used for her wedding, Artemesia. The owner, Kim, responded pretty quickly even though she was out of the country. She had us fill out a form online, and got us a mid-range quote pretty quickly. Great... we were all set to meet with Kim and were already impressed with her customer service. From there, it went down hill.

Last Thursday we were supposed to meet Kim at 7:30pm. Around 6:00 I get a phone call from her saying she was not feeling well and we should cancel. Okay, not a problem... if you're sick, you're sick. I then told Missy who said, "Yup, that sounds about right... she's pretty flaky." Ummm... hello?!?!?! Why didn't you tell me that before?!?!?! Whatever, Missy reads this blog, and truth be told, I cannot fault her because in the end, Artemesia did a nice job with their wedding.

So, we re-scheduled for 6:00 last night. At 5:15, Chad gets a call from Kim saying she wants to confirm our 6:30 appointment. He said, "I thought it was for 6:00." She said 6:30 would work because we would not need the full hour. Yet her website, and all of her information she sends clearly states she likes an hour for the first consultation. So Chad tells me, and I say "Uh uh. We are meeting her at 6:00." I called Kim and explained that we had somewhere to be later and that my mom was meeting us there at 6:00. She said okay and she will see us then.

We had no idea how long it would take to get there, so we were VERY early (5:30). As we were walking in the door to the place where we were going to meet her, my phone rang. It was Kim... go figure. "Hi Alex. I am sorry, I do not like to involve my clients in my personal life..." and she went on about being out in Maple Grove with an emergency tooth ache for her boyfriend, and yadda, yadda, yadda. She said there is no way she would be there by 6:00... she did not even know how to get to our meeting place from where she was. Pardon my French, but... ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?!?! So she said she may not even make it by 6:30, but we were welcome to wait for her. I told her no thank you, I will not be waiting, and hung up.

A person who relies on word of mouth, should have a LOT better customer service skills than that. First, she tried to lie about the time we were meeting by calling Chad and not me. Hello... we had her confirmation she e-mailed us that said 6:00. Then, she flakes again for the second meeting in a row. And then, worst of all in my opinion, she did not even try to save face. No apology e-mail, no phone call, nothing.

So... if you are looking for a florist, do yourself a favor and DO NOT, under any circumstances use Artemesia.

And as long as I am bad mouthing businesses, don't use Ramsey Photography either... they are the homophobic assholes. Cheers!
