Fun at the Fair

So my last post was things to eat at the State Fair. Obviously, that is the most important thing to do at the Fair. Still, there are other fun things to do, and so I will share those with you now as well.

- Eat lots of food - Sorry, it had to be said.

- The Giant slide - I have not done it for a few years, but always loved it as a kid. Perhaps it is time to relive my childhood.

- Visit the butterheads - Yup, you gotta see 'em.

- Skyride - I like the old one where you get in your own little capsule, but the new one that is like a chair lift is even better. It is open and really fun to go to that side of the fair that no one ever gets to.

- Visit the KARE barn - When I was younger, I would go and sit there for hours... hoping one day I would anchor myself from the fair. Then, I grew up and worked there... no thanks! :) But still fun to visit, and the KARE staff are the best.

- Miracle of Birth Center - This has to be one of my favorite things to do. I love seeing all the little baby animals.

- Ride Ye Old Mill - The old fashioned water ride. It is sort of a make out ride, and Chad has never been on it.

- Fun Houses in the Midway - I used to love these as a kid.

- Haunted House - It used to be a lot more fun when they could grab you and really scare the crap out of you. Damn sexual harassment... takes the fun out of everything.

- Talent Show - If you can stay awake that long, it is fun to see the many different homegrown talents.

I have no doubt there are many more things I missed. Please feel free to share your favorites as well.

Fair Fare

Well, if you can believe it... it is time again for the Great Minnesota Get Together. Of course, I am talking about none other than the Minnesota State Fair. I don't really think people outside of Minnesota have a concept for what this really means. For how excited we get.... for how we look forward to this time of year every season. I love summer, but the best part of it ending is the State Fair. So, really everyone goes to the Fair to eat. Fattys, skinny minnies, and diabetics alike... we all eat ourselves full at the State Fair. So now, a list of my favorite foods I am looking forward to. And please, do not freak out when you don't see Cheese Curds on my list. And away we go...

- Pork Chop on a stick - How Jewish of me, I know. Porky's Delight was the best, but they are long gone. So the new ones are good... just not AS good.

- Danielson & Daughters Onion Rings - Only one booth; right outside the food building. There are no other onion rings like it.

- Orange Treet - Same as an Orange Julius, but a different name. You have to drink this while eating the onion rings above.

- Fudge Puppies - A recent addition to my list; Basically, a waffle dipped in chocolate covered in whipped cream. How bad could that be?!?!

- Sweet Martha's - A good old fashioned standby. I do not even like milk, but you have to finish off your cookies with a glass of milk.

- Pickle Dogs - Only one booth; just before the Midway. It is a pickle, covered with cream cheese, and wrapped in pastrami. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! And it can only be topped off with a glass of grape Kool-Aid.

- Sweet Roll - Inside the Food Building, and if you really want to do it up, ask for "extra goop!"

- Dippin' Dots - I know they are everywhere now, but I still love 'em and always make room for them.

- Homemade Peanut Roll - A delicious snack I always buy and take home for later.

And now a few honorable mentions that I enjoy, but likely won't have...

- French Fries - You know the big yellow booth!

- Corn Dog - I used to eat a million, not anymore.

- Sparkling Apple Cider Float - Enjoyable, but I need to save room in my tummy.

- Dairy Building Malt - Good, but you can always get a good malt somewhere outside of the Fair.

And finally a list of things people like, that I just never got into...

- Cheese Curds - They are alright, but not my thing.

- Mini Donuts - I usually eat one, and then am good for another year.

- Turkey Leg - Those things are disgusting and barbaric looking.

- Foot Long Hot Dog - What... a regular one isn't big enough at the Fair?

- Roasted Corn - You chew it up, swallow, and it comes out whole. No thanks... not for me!

Well, I hope I did not miss anything, but with all those delicious delicacies, I am bound to have forgotten something. For those of you who have been to the fair, please leave a comment with your favorite Fair Fare. Come on.... you know you want to.

Dream Job

I love my job... I have said that from the moment I started working here. But it is also fun sometimes to fantasize. So... here are a list of some of my not-so-realistic dream jobs. Other than being a cruise director, they are in no particular order:

1. Cruise Director - It does not get more fun than that.

2. Talk Show Host - The Alex Locke Show.... come on, you would tune it.

3. Today Show Anchor - This is Today with Meredith Vieira and Alex Locke. Nice ring, huh?!?!

4. Doctor - I am definitely not dedicated enough to school, but how amazing to help save lives!

5. Pilot - I think flying in the cockpit would be so fun.

6. Broadway Star - I wish I could open my mouth and just belt out a tune. Plus my name on the marquee would not be so bad.

7. Boy Band Member - I used to think I was the 6th missing guy from NSYNC.

8. Judge - How fun to throw the book at some of those asshole criminals out there?!?!

9. President - I would really only want this job for a day, and not a minute longer. WAY to stressful, but I think it would be fun to do for a little bit.

10. Dolphin Trainer - Something I ALWAYS wanted to do, and would still do it in a second.

Some of these are just plain fun, others amazing, and others are just so interesting. So... what would your dream job be?

Vaca All The Way

Per usual, I was talking about travelling yesterday. One of my co-workers said to me, "Have you ever been somewhere you haven't loved?" I realized.... no. Well, with the exception of Des Moines, Iowa... what a shit hole! Sure things have gone wrong in certain places, like Missy, Tom, AP, and I all getting carsick in the horrid mountains of St. Lucia. But on the whole... I LOVE to travel and thoroughly enjoy my time away.

My dream job, for a long time, has been a cruise director. Essentially, that is what I do now, only my ship doesn't sail. But I love getting out and seeing the world. Okay, maybe I just REALLY like tropical places, though Alaska was awesome too. But I digress... I love to travel, and love having that as my guilty pleasure and my way to spend my hard earned dollars.

In February, Chad and I are going on a 10-night cruise. This will be my longest one yet, and I am VERY excited about it. It will be on Holland America's Noordam (a ship I already cruised Alaska on) and we will be going to the following ports: Half Moon Cay, Turks & Caicos, Dominican Republic, Bonaire, Curacao, and Aruba. Of those, I have only been to Aruba, and it is my favorite of all the ports so far. Chad and I have a dream... one day we will move to the Caribbean and live in peace and quiet. Let's see if that ever happens.

Because I am a complete cruise whore, we also are doing a cruise for our Honeymoon. It will be to Hawaii. Both of us have always wanted to go to Hawaii and cruising (though not our original plan) allows us to go all over Hawaii for much cheaper than flying there and doing it on our own. We will be going on NCL America's Pride of America to Honolulu, Maui, Kuai, Kona, and Hilo. I can hardly wait... unfortunately, I have to wait... January 15, 2011.

Once those cruises are done, it is time to spread our wings and do an international cruise. My new destination that I desperately want to see is Santorini. Just google the images and you will see why I want to go there. Chad has also always wanted to do an Alaskan cruise, so we will certainly do that at some point to.

If only I had more time, and more money.... I would travel a lot more. Oh well, such is life. That said, I certainly appreciate what I have and am able to do.

Reliving the Dream

Well, I got home from Alumni Camp at Herzl, and it was AWESOME!!! First, it was so fun to be back. Second, it was great to share this part of my life with Chad. Now when I say "After Havdallah we will do Rad Hayom before we head to the Mo for Oneg," he will know exactly what that means. So here is a re-cap of the weekend...

Friday
The drive up to camp was pretty typical. That said... there are a lot of housing developments that have popped up. Some of the towns you drive through have also been built up. Of course, we stopped at the Drive-In for lunch. I had my favorite... hot fudge banana malt. It was as delish as I remember.

When we got to camp, we were greeted by a few people singing "Ay veynu shalom alechem." That set the tone for the weekend. We went up to our room, unpacked, and then we took our first walk around camp. We went to all of mine and Missy's cabins. I saw all of the plaques I made as a staff member with my campers in Vav, 17, 20, and 25 (not sure why we did not make one when I was an ozo for 7). I also showed Chad the ozo mo.... shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! We went into the haks and got pretty grossed out and then spent a little time at the Mercaz. Some things never change... like the beauty at the Mercaz. Other things do change... I used to be fine showering in the haks, now I would feel like a need a shower to clean off after showering in there.

After the tour, we relaxed and got ready for Shabbat. Everyone was dressed in white and we had the traditional Shabbat Caravan. It was so fun to be there again... it had been 12 years since I was last on staff. As always, the caravan ended at the flag circle. Though they no longer use the Canadian flag, or sing O Canada, we did for old times sake. Now, they use a Herzl flag and sing the Herzl song, which is pretty cool too. After a few flag songs, and lowering the flags, we headed to services. Unfortunately, due to the rain, we had services indoors, but they were still nice. Following services we had the traditional Herzl Shabbat dinner... matzo ball soup, salad, challah, chicken, and those little potato thingies.

When dinner was over, the lights went down, and we had our candlelight song session. It was so great!!!! I did miss seeing people walking through the aisles though. After dinner, we went to the staff mo, and it was time for Oneg. Essentially, we all sat around sharing favorite Herzl memories or hilarious stories. It was so fun just listening... and sharing a few as well. Chad said this was his favorite part of the weekend... though he truly loved the entire time and wants to go back again. Finally it was time for bed... Saturday was a BIG day.

Saturday
What better way to start a Saturday morning at camp then with an optional breakfast starring the sweet rolls. DELISH!!!! After breakfast we got showered and headed to services... again indoors due to rain. When services were over, it was time for rotations, and thankfully the sun was out. Chad and I did not do any one thing in particular... we watched and observed. We took another walk around camp. We went to the waterfront... damn there is a lot of beach. They say it is the lowest the lake has been in 37 years. Those who remember the lake would not believe what it looks like now. After some time at the waterfront, we went to ozo park and watched 30 year old men pretend to be 20 year-olds playing ultimate frisbee. That was highly entertaining, though I will say... some of 'em still have it. Next we went over to the Mercaz to watch all the people boating. It was a beautiful view. Finally, we went into Cabin 13 where I was Papa Ozo and we found on the wall all of the notes my ozos wrote me. It was so fun to see those and be reminded of that summer.

Next up... Picnic lunch with the addition of grilled cheese. We all wanted the picnic lunch experience, but were not willing to give up the yummy goodness that is grilled cheese. As soon as lunch was over, we started singing ozo songs. We went as far back as 1979 and did every year of ozo songs that had a representative at Alumni Camp. Thankfully, we did not do Kadimah songs!! After the songs, it was time to start with B-I-K-K-U-R-I-M... Bikkurim.

It began with a watermelon seed spitting contest, then ga-ga, and then the marathon which included a human pyramid, saltine whistling, b-ball free throws, the rock wall, the kadimah wall, walking an egg with a spoon, a lot of running, and so much more. After that, it was tug-o-war. We are just not as young as we once were. Everyone got pooped, so it was time for a break before finishing off with kickball. Bikkurim was a ton of fun!

Next we went and rested for a little bit before it was time for dinner. It was the traditional kugel, eggs, salad, and blintzes dinner followed by Eskimo Pies with peanut butter. Delish (how many times can I say that)!!! After dinner we were treated to a brief but funny version of 12 Gates. By then it was already time for evening program, which I was leading. We first did Comedy Sportz, then a sing down, and finally an awesome game of Aleph You Too. I have never seen a bra come off that fast!!!! After the games, it was time for the big announcement of who won Bikkurim. For once, I was on the winning Red team!!!! Face it, Blue always loses... another Herzl tradition.

Once evening program was over, it was time havdallah lead by the '99 ozrim. Then, it was time for the Pour House. Unfortunately, it is the post-tornado Pour House, but none the less we had a good time. I got my root beer in a frosty mug, did a little dancing, and had a fun night watching Stella take on NASCAR. When we got back to camp, it was a bonfire at the Ner Howie, then a little star gazing at the Mercaz before Chad and I got scared we were going to be eaten by a bear. So, we returned to the bonfire for a few minutes, and finally went to bed after 1:00. I have not stayed up that late for years.

Sunday
Sunday morning, we slept in past breakfast, bought $80 worth of Herzl regalia (and I still think I want one of those blankets) toured camp one last time where Chad took a picture of all my plaques and notes from my ozos, and with that, Alumni Camp was over.

It was truly an incredible weekend. I would do it again in a second, though I don't think it should be every year. I feel that might take away from it being a unique and special experience. So.... my recommendation is every five years, add one extra day, and cap it at 75, because anymore would lose the intimacy.

Economy

This economy sucks. I feel like we are spiraling out of control and no one knows when we will stop. Hopefully soon, and hopefully the repercussions are not as devastating as we think. But for now... things are not good.

Work
So many people are losing their jobs. For those that are lucky enough to keep their jobs, they are getting pay cuts, wage freezes, loss of benefits, and more.

Vacations
People cannot afford vacations anymore. You work hard at your job and are rewarded with time off. That time off should be spent doing something fun. But in this economy, it is hard to do. Disney raised the price to their parks on Sunday.... single day pass and multiple day passes. They did so because they reported a 26% loss. I have a piece of advice Disney... if you are losing money because no one is coming to the parks, don't raise the price. That won't bring in more people.

Cars
Cash for clunkers. It's a great program, really. But now there are threats of shutting it down because there isn't enough money. And just today, I got out of my car and saw a gorgeous Pontiac G6 convertible. Then it made me sad to know GM has shut down the Pontiac brand. Another poor sign of the economy. I had a Pontiac and loved it. Now... the whole line will be gone as if it never existed.

Theater
I love going to the theater... always have. But they are suffering too. It is almost a weekly occurrence that I get e-mails from Chanhassen practically begging people to come to their shows. One e-mail gave us 50% off tickets. Hello.... two for the price of one. That is crazy!!

Vendors
One of the caterers we had talked to for the wedding was not interested in giving us prices, menus, etc. because he was not sure they would be in business in October of 2010. Businesses are concerned they are going to have to shut their doors because no one is spending money.

I am not an economist, and do not even pretend to understand what the issues are. But come on... someone has to fix this problem. I know the Obama administration is doing everything they think they can, but certainly there has to be more that can be done. Drastic times call for drastic measures.
